Saving Lives & Limbs with Big Data

Using data science, we uncovered how to reduce rates of catastrophic job injuries. The leading software provider of Environment, Health, Safety, and Quality Management, Intelex Technologies, commissioned the author Gary Edwards to investigate the data on events leading up to workplace incidents, the circumstances surrounding them, and the after-effects. This White Paper showcases insights garnered from analyzing workplace injury from over 1,000 companies worldwide. A key clinical insight emerged on one company where we linked increases in non-recordable documentation with a 10 to 1 decrease in workplace injury. We then expanded this finding epidemiologically to an aggregation of 1000 companies’ data. What we found: companies who go the extra distance of recording “near misses” had occupational safety ratings up to 3 times better than those that did not.
